I truly agree with post #93 they are not profiteers or opportunists red sea is a legit hobby staple. just had a heckuva bad run sequence on a few thou units am thinking

Mistakes happen. Had RS come out and apologized and made everyone affected whole with as little stress as possible, I don't think people would be as upset. But the denial and censorship of customers is very poor treatment.

Many stores feature RedSea tanks - as display tanks - as of today - I have not heard of any failures. I have a RedSea gen 1 tank - which is about 8 years old - with no problems (I did not care for the stand, however). Many aquarium stores do not make money on selling tanks - since people can buy them online. They make money on maintenance and livestock - not dry goods.

This is not true at all. On red sea, and higher end items like mp40s and leds there is a min price you have to sell them above mark up. I have seen the mark up first hand, they do make money off the Red Sea Tanks and other dry goods.

70% of saltwater tanks sold are red sea? We’ll need better supporting data than some lfs guys for that. Tons of places don’t even carry anything beside Aqeon. Also, if you look through any of the other threads, redsea was denying there were any issues with their previous tanks up until the day they release their “repair kits” for the old version. I think it’s been made pretty clear that they put cost cutting way before any kind of customer service.

The appeal of a turnkey solution certainly exist for those without time/experience and with disposable income.

i do like the looks of the black cabinet setups but they also seem limiting. i considered the reefer 1000 but for the cost i can do way better building my own setup.

I know they aren't fancy but Aqueon/ AGA tanks are solid, yes they are rimmed but is that really a bad thing other than for mounting lights? i wish they made larger formats like Marinelands old DD 300 but not made by marineland (the old blowout kings). They used to make a 7 footer too.

Mine’s an aqueon and it’s brand new. They’re reliable. I had a blowout recently on my 90 gallon cube. It was an old perfecto though.

The servicing industry makes a very poor sample considering people who buy Red Sea generally have cash to burn and value convenience over other values. I used to do servicing and generally worked on the same couple brands of equipment, but those were far from our top sellers in the store itself. Aqueon, Marineland, Hagen were still king by volume.

You're quoting something that was not meant - but I agree with you - don't buy a RwdSea tank - because - you do not seem to have an open mind

Why would you?

You don't carry the weight of the liability, nor does the customer blame you for Red Sea's failure. Not to mention, you likely have inventory, and you like are making a much better margin on a RS tank then on any livestock you sell or empty tanks you might carry.

Small LFS' make up a tiny fraction of the market anyway. I rarely see ma and pa LFS' that survive on aquarium hardware now.

Your credentials are what? LOL. I mean if you're an aquarium store wholesaler, all good, But - any LFS here in this area - makes no money at all on tanks. They make money on livestock - food - etc. Perhaps you live in a different type of area - but most people here buy tanks, etc - on the internet.

14 years starting from retail employee, management, then purchasing for one of the largest stores in Canada, but hey, I guess listening to your service guy made more sense

Don't get me wrong, I loved customers like you. Loyal to a fault, willing to pay for brand.

i had a thought about blow outs. Does any one else think it could also have something to do with power heads pushing extra hard on the glass. The really use a minimum thickness rimless tank , that seems tall and water level is about as high as you could get.

This is just a troll thread. I had two aga 300dd tanks fail on me 8 months apart, the 2nd one taking 20 years worth of SPS and fish. Also had a Custom miracles 240g with a small leak. Have a s1000 g2 now and I’m not worried.

Even if they never had lots of leak problems I wouldn’t have bought Red Sea just because their prices really didn’t make sense to me, definitely just the “Gucci” of aquariums I guess

Also shout out to innovative marine for their 15g AIO, got me into the hobby at the beginning of the year because the price was so good (100$) just took it home after first visit to LFS to “check it out” , now I regret not going with their 200g for my upgrade after because i went thru 4 used tanks since January (sold 2 & the 15) & now am in a 80g 4’x2’ & working on a 210g 8’x30” custom acrylic habitat tank I picked up used

So looking at my max 260 the front glass panel isnt supported by the stand at all, and the back of the tank is all the way to the edge. I see what people are talking about. For those who had a seam burst was it the front panel?? Im looking at the silicone and it does look like it is supporting the whole glass weight of that front paine. Thats scary as hell!

Very naive post. I've seen landed cost and sold them retail, Red Sea and the retailer are making very healthy profits on these "luxury" tanks. But hey, a lot of people will think more $ means higher quality - I was more than happy to take their money.

Also, the conspiracy comment is a lazy strawman. No one is saying there is a conspiracy. I wouldn't expect more from someone who thought some aquarium service guy's comment on his client's tanks was a good representation of the market. Yikes! lol.

You've clearly never run a business with that attitude. And if you have, you wouldn't have lasted long. It's all about customer relationships. Good word of mouth. Google reviews. Returning customers.

If you really think that your view represents how businesses are run, I truly feel bad for you.
