Red Sea tank failing?!?

There must be some misunderstanding. This does not make sense. If you bought it from your LFS, it got there somehow. Did he order it for you? Canada has hundreds or thousands of Red Sea tanks. Call your LFS and get him/her involved. Canada is a real market with real trade agreements. Something here does not add up.

Wont take a lot of tanks failing to get them to loose serious money. Each insurance claim is 20-40k+ and you can bet that the insurer will get at lest half out of red sea.

The insurance company will get nothing from Red Sea.

Thank you for this clarification. Sorry for your situation. Us Americans tend to take a lot for granted. So I guess your only realistic option is to attempt option 3 even if you can only flip it. If your LFS gets stuck with the bill, I don't see how they would want to remain a retailer for Red Sea given that practise.

Man, if Waterbox could get their logistics together, they could really rip some market share away from Red Sea. Me personally, and my LFS have had years of success with Red Sea. Yeah, their cheapy ABS plumbing is pretty weak, but in our community there are now there are hundreds of RSRs and MAX tanks with no reported seam failures.

I hope Waterbox is successful. Their tanks, weirs, plumbing, and cabinets are in many ways superior IMO.

I hope my LFS will take the cost of the shipping, but I highly doubt he will. He didn’t seem to happy when I called him and explained the situation today.
If I end up getting this tank, I’ll be selling it, and getting concept aquariums to build me a custom tank again.

Give him your teardown tank. Call it even.

With Red Sea's retailer program, almost no LFS are Platinum dealers any more. Not even WWC was Platinum as of last summer at least. If you are not platinum, you don't make much with MAP pricing. His margin is likely around 10% which does not leave him with a lot to share. I'll ask my LFS guy for a ballpark, so you know what you are asking your LFS to do if that is helpful. lmk

Or I contact a local attorney about it. They are not honoring your warranty if you bought locally you should have to incur travel or cost expense to replace it. It is like Honda saying they will replace your transmission in your car but you got to go to Japan to get it.

I get across the border with my birth certificate and valid MI drivers license and a stern talking to about getting the enhanced license. How far are you from your nearest us border? Also I feel you could easily get the enhanced clearance however it’s been a while since I looked into. Remember by treaty we have an open border. This all blows. When I was a kid we would go over to Windsor for lunch. Sorry about you tank.

This is terrible that you are dealing with this, given the amount of time and money spent on this tank, and most importantly, the inhabitants of it. Surely, this is not all of their tanks they produce, or is it? With so much finger pointing at their recent tank issues, you would think they would “double the silicone”, so to speak. Or hire additional QA personnel. I wonder if this will affect the sales of their new XL 200/300 additions.

If you do not want the “new tank” that they are supposed to send, why not try selling it to someone in the USA, and having Red Sea ship it there...for “you” to pick up? Seems like you and a potential buyer could work it out. After all worked out with buyer, new tank for you that you mentioned. Good luck with it all!

Yea, i'm interested to see how the 900xxl's go. This could get pretty bad if those fail too like the 750xxl. I couldn't make a big tank purchase from red sea after seeing all this stuff. Ill stick with my reefer 250, they don't seem to have any issues.

Defects happen in all manufacturing enterprises -- mass market players & Custom builders too. Red Sea has the best warranty, and are the most likely in the industry to maintain the capacity to back it up. Food for thought.

I was in the same situation as you and it actually only cost me $65 Canadian to broker the new tank to my house. If its a warranty replacement you aren't subject to any taxes or fees. Msg me privately if you want any guidance through the brokering process, I'd be happy to help. Like I said, only $65.00 was all it cost me for a replacement!

Yes very true but this isn’t just a simple replacing of a tank when you have a established living reef going on. Definitely don’t wanna take a risk like that especially knowing there are issues going around.

Reading the email they sent you, Option 1 appears to be what I did which simply meant hiring a brokerage company and allowing them to bring the item over the border for you. That only cost me $65.00 all said and done. The process was much easier than I initially thought.

In any event, doesn't sound like you need to take this route. In the future, if you ever want or need any help with brokering I would be happy to oblige. I have some experience with logistics and freight forwarding over the USA-CAN border.

Never used a broker before, but from the sounds of the email, they wanted me to cover shipping costs. I know when I bought some of my equipment, going over the boarder sucked. Doubled my price usually. And when I called a broker, they asked the weight and size of it and that’s what they gave my estimate on.

Fair enough! Red Sea covered my shipping costs and I suspect they intended to cover yours too, but perhaps it didn't seem so obvious in that email. Glad you are able to get it sorted out, either way.

We buy a lot of stuff from the US and ship it to a parcel pickup just across the border. I know what you mean about the costs increasing with duty, etc. I've been pretty lucky and usually ended up only paying the taxes and skipping the duty somehow.
