I started off with a 40g tank and a stand (from doing freshwater) and a 20gal tank (for the sump) is practically free if you catch it on sale at Petco (and order online for the extra discount). So, ignoring the cost of the tank(s) and stand...I stopped paying attention after I went past $2k or so.
Just looking at my purchases on BRS, since December of last year, so not even a full year into this, I've already spent $3000 just with them. I've probably spent at least that much at my LFSs and Amazon. And, I don't know, maybe another$500-$1000 on livestock. Plus, we should add back in the cost of the tanks/stand.

And then there's the 20 (25?) gallon Innovative Marine AIO tank that I've set up as an invert/coral QT, a 20 gallon fish QT, and two 10 gallon tanks for TTM QT, plus all the support systems they need, which are mostly used as spare parts when they're not in use (power heads, heaters etc).

So, since I don't want to know the actual amount I've put into this, I'd guess I'd call it about $5000-$10000, on a 40 gallon tank, in less than a year.

I do sometimes kick myself for not starting off with a bigger tank since the costs wouldn't have been that much higher, but it would have meant buying a new tank, a new stand and rearranging my living room since the 40 gallon tank and stand only have a few inches of clearance on either side so nothing wider would fit there.

Oh, and that $5000-$10000 doesn't include anything super expensive either. I don't have an Apex or any other controller. The most expensive single item is probably the Vectra return pump I just upgraded to. Pretty sure I spent more on that than the skimmer.

On my nano I just tallied mine up, not considering what’s inside the glass at all. Also bought everything brand new, I’m at 3700… but it is worth every penny to me, as it brings so much joy to the household

I do not know how much it is worth now, but I'll try to estimate what I spend to be where I am with my 120G.
Tank $0.00 Husband found it discarded on road side and picked it up. But some labor involved to fix leaks.
Lights $200
HOB filter $100
HOB refugium $75
Top for tank $40
heater $70 (was given some. bought a back up)
Live rocks $40 ( most were given from friend giving up)
fish $275 (would be more now.)
inverts $65
1 gorgonian $15
But I have a FOWLR except for that brand new Gorgonian.
I have that tank for at least 6 years, upgraded from a 55G set up, I got free from friend who gave up. I had that 55G at least 4 years. One of his fish is still with me, and the rest of my fish are all pre Covid, therefore over 2 years old.
I probably forgotten stuff or did not remember all the prices correctly so I would say it is at least $1200.00.
I did not include the other small tanks I have nor the macro algae I am trying to grow in them, so I am cheating....

My small 20g is roughly 2k all in including fish and corals.

I have a 100G IM priced out to be 5-6k all new equipment. No controller but might need to add another 3-400 for a dosing pump a year or so down the line.

I believe it’s the CADE 2100 reefer and the Waterbox 320 Reefer. Still doing research. May try to buy the support equipment used to save money. We shall see.
