UWC told me this morning that they will meet with their producer of the product and post their data tomorrow or Wednesday.
 
I still firmly believe UWC is doing nothing at all.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since they have been in contact with Randy but at some point that benefit goes away. Best be fair to all involved.

While we are at it, I have to ask again…what’s in Betta Water and API’s Aquarium salts ? ;) ;)
 
i fully expect UWC to come back ,if they do at all, contradicting the findings put forth here. It will lead to some heated discussions. There is enough research for me to make vibrant very plausible for me and when it comes to my tank, i will not put any chemical in it when it could lead me down the road where issues can arise..

I wonder how many folks who dosed vibrant lost mollusks?

I had a severe ich outbreak after starting to use vibrant 2 weeks prior. I have a fowlr tank and lost an emperor angel, lionfish, and yellow belly puffer. I have no specific evidence that vibrant was the true cause but it was the only change I had made. All my fish came from live aquarius divers den. I dont know if vibrant stresses the fish enough to be vulnerable to ich or if it possibly contained ich, but it was a pretty big loss for me. I didn't think it could have been the vibrant until catching up on all of this.

What a contrast to how Tropic Marin handled/are handling their debacle.
 
Forgive me if someone has already posted this, but that concentration coupled with the EPA warning levels seems crazy bad to use Algaefix or Vibrant in a reef aquarium based on studies Algaefix actually submitted for approval:


"If you wish to be protective of aquarium organisms such as marine crustacea, further analyses of the concentration of Busan 77 in the water during treatment with AlgaeFix should be conducted to ascertain that it does not approach the levels shown to be toxic to marine invertebrate species in the submitted studies [Mysid, LC50=13ppm (95% confidence interval of 9.1 - 16ppm) NOEC <;7.8 ppm; Quahog clam, LC50 = 350 ppb (95% confidence interval of 0 - 71 Oppb), NOEC =230 ppbJ."

I admit I do not read ever post here but with regards to OSHA, EPA, water treatment, and other forms of proper disposal has anyone asked if this pertains to water changes?

What I am asking is there are two ways to enter a waterway:

1. Water change
2. Dumping remaining bottle down a drain or outside

What is the products effective life cycle in a display and would a water change behave similar to say empty the bottle or a percentage after X amount of time?

Does this question make sense? Just trying to get some clarity around disposal and water changes. Note I am not using the product but see a lot of chatter by several with regards to regulations.

Tropic Marin is not a debacle. It is an issue and they are keeping the hobbyists informed. If there was any delay it wasn't to hide but rather collect their data, assess, and then answer.

The question makes sense but the answer is not known. The polymer will not break down (or very slowly), but it does bind to negatively charged stuff (bacteria, organisms, detritus, some dissolved organics, mineral surfaces, etc.), taking it out of the available water column for additional action. Some folks in the chem forum are trying to test this.

I personally would not get too worked up about water changes and disposal. It's more of an academic question. :)

You've still not posted any official info regarding disposal of the algaecide itself. Just your own ideas of what is to take place.

I did. I posted the EXACT disposal method for containers 5 gallons or less that are nonrefillable.
I'm not disagreeing with you, and I read your post. I just was saying disposal rules somehow has to be a concentration issue. In other words - you are not allowed to dump 60% algaecide into your storm sewer - but clearly - you;'re allowed to empty your swimming pool (which has a much lower concentration)? I mean - its not like I have an EPA approved 25,000 gallon container:)

Yah that sounds about right. We can dump all sorts of crap down the sink in lab so long as it's diluted first.

I do not think we need to spend more time debating disposal. It's really just a red herring to the true issue. IMO, it was an interesting twist on a product when you do not know the composition and so may be getting incorrect disposal info.

But in reality, I do not think anyone here needs to be worrying about water changes. If folks have convinced themselves by whatever reasoning that it is OK or not OK, that's fine, but I don't think there's any more to be gained by rehashing the issue.

As an aside, the role of the EPA and sewer authorities is to limit the quantities of toxic substances entering the water, not to prevent all uses of toxic substances that might enter the water through normal use. Lots and lots of chemicals are prohibited from dumping down a drain, but they enter from urine, feces, hand washing, and other means that are unavoidable uses of those products.
 
Concentration is the issue for EVERY toxic molecule. A little is not toxic and may be needed, and a lot can be toxic.

NONE of these products are used at the concentration supplied. They are all diluted for use. Thus, the concentration in the bottle is of no relevance to the ultimate toxicity.
Agree completely - And I've read the warning multiple times. The EPA warning in some places is talking about the concentration in the bottle. I.e First aid instructions, etc. The instructions for disposal also vary depending on the concentration. BTW - the EPA sheet also seems to contradict itself - Since it does explain what to do with swimming pool effluent. Which is obviously going to go into the storm sewer. (They say to notify your sewer company that you are going to do it)
