We all hate them, Dinos! I have a cure...

Yeah but it's also used as an anti protazoal like in giardia infection for example. Plus it attacks at the level of dna synthesis which is common to Protozoa and bacteria. Sulfa drugs attack at a mechanism specific to bacteria so they have no effect of Protozoa. I'm a med student so my knowledge of pharm and micro is limited to human based diseases but that's at least how I understand it. And sulfa drugs aren't used to treat Protozoa clinically. Metro is
My wife is is in the medical field and she is the one who told me about what I am using :)

thanks for the clarification :D

Well Russ what if you had a method in place for them to never return?
I would think if you can stop the reproduction of the individual cells then it's a case closed situation.
For instance..
A blackout what does this do to the cell specifically? Not able to create the simple sugars from Photosynthesis for cell survival?
What is we are dealing with let's say 500k cells. How many of those would actually die and how many would live from consuming plankton?

This has been a great venture for me and I will show that the best way to deal with these protozoans is on the DNA level.

my lights will be on during all treatments.

i know peroxide and uv keeps them in hiding.

we'll see if the others have an effect.
btw i still have that sample bag of my dinos. just havent had time to ship it.

No problem buddy!

I just wanted to add that it has been 1 and 1/2 years since I completed my process in my 2 tanks (for some reason they both had dinos at the same time) with them to never to return again.
@Russ265, I'm not sure how it will work with no blackout and not using the re-fresh. Please keep us up to date.

refresh is dangerous to inverts. ill at least narrow down if waste away is as effective as peroxide and uv.

metro will receive the same scrutiny.

So are dinos, lol

my failsafe is always going back to low peroxide dosing over time and uv. no need to subject my inverts to unneeded stress.

worst case scenario. all your methods fail and i stick with what works for my strain.

and wait 3 months before pulling the doser.

ill be honest. i have higher expectation of metro.

waste away requires nutrients i doubt i have. most dino tanks are clean as a whistle water quality wise.

never heard of a gha infested tank hit with dinos. regardless, ill try it out.

Interesting thread. I knew Twillards microscopic pictures looked familiar....very similar to trichamonas....a common human STD, and metronidazole is one of the drugs of choice for it.

trying to tell us something?

i kid.

LOL, nah. It is like a bad STD for our tanks.

Twillard how well have you refined the dose needed and the length of treatment? How does it affect our tank inhabitants ...SPS, LPS, Zoas, inverts, fish?

I am in the middle of this so I am a little ways away from firm conclusions.
What I can say is this..
I have administered 750mg into a tank. No deaths from fish, inverts, lps or sps coral

Here it is guys
0 reproduction of dinoflagellates at 7 days

isnt their life cycle 14-15 days?
What I am doing isn't about the life cycle. It's about stopping the reproduction process :)
With what I have dosed they loose the bond and end up in the mechanical filtration

So here it is a solution to dinoflagellates
No harsh blackouts
No h2o2
No UV
No harsh chemicals (zero change on any living fish, coral, inverts)
No tank breakdowns :)

Very nice!! Congratulations on the successful treatment!

Do you have to pull your carbon while using this method?
