What's Your Opinion?

It has to be said that if you don't like a response, keep looking. You will eventually find someone that backs up what you want to do. I see this a lot too. In every aspect of life. o_O

Actually, far from what I'm looking for is a small niche. That's not where new ideas grow, but the same ideas are passed around. I've always participated in multiple forums, but a lot of them disappeared when I went "underground" for a year+, due to medical reasons. I am not a "sweet little girl" looking through rose colored glasses and I've never left a "kitchen" because I couldn't "deal". I'm wanting to move away from Facebook to have deeper conversations, conversations that you can go back to easily and doesn't end up a 1000 miles down on my newsfeed. I want a search function and I want people to NOT be able to edit their posts and/or delete them until the end of time.

I'm not a religious man, but AMEN!

For everything EXCEPT the "I am not a sweet little girl", right? RIGHT?!
That's right! (said in my deepest manliest voice) Although I did just finish dancing around like a goof with my daughter.

There are many subject matter experts I consider their opinions invaluable on this forum. This is one of the reasons I choose this as my sole reef hobby forum.

I have also noticed this in the last few months. Some people getting real upset if you differ from their opinion. I try to offer my experiences on this forum to others and hope that I can maybe save people time and money from something that I have dealt with in the past. I also learn that way from here too. But I agree we are and can be some opinionated people. There are more than one way to skin a cat (a wise old man once told me) and acting like someone pooped in your cheeros if someone has a different way of doing things is the wrong way of going about it. The funny thing is that the person giving the advice is a true veteran reef keeper. I love the Reefing lifestyle, community and we will never progress if we don't try different things. Thank god there is a place like R2R for that to happen. Now I have to get back to my tank that has MH lights...the only lights I run;)

Well, I think it's been established that opinions are formed based on experiences and sometimes are adopted as "facts". These "facts" are argued on this and many other forums/social medias to drive home a point. Often times these "facts" are rebutted by others with their own "facts." Oh the wicked Web we weave for ourselves!!! So now what do we do about it?

I would find it interesting to discuss some appropriate responses when a fellow poster becomes "ready to take your head off" as RFBF said in post #1. Or on the opposite side, if you're ready to do the taking.

As an example, instead of the response "no you are wrong" try "that's an interesting perspective, can you explain why you think that." Or "that's different than what I've done, I'm glad it works for you". I guess my point is there is no need to get nasty when someone disagrees with you or if you'd like to challenge some one else's point of view.

We have threads for acronyms, coral and fish compatibility, parameter guidelines, etc., why not have one for being nice!!! There are some folks on this site that are quite good at this, so let's hear some examples or tactics you've used.

As someone who hasn't been in the hobby that long I value everyone's opinion. I don't consider any of them to be wrong I simply take it all in and decide which would best suite me. What works for some might not work for others. If everyone had the same opinions about everything life would be boring. That's my opinion anyway (hahaha)

You can have 3 different experts give 3 different opinions who is correct?. You are because you take in their opinions and form your own

This is a picture of a Pterois sphex. Just because it is your opinion it is a P. volitans, does not make it so. You would be wrong.

The other day someone asked for an ID on a hitchhiker. It was my opinion that it was an Elysia. It turned out to be a seahare. I was wrong.

That's where I agree when it comes to live stock but as for which method is best ,what's better to dose, what light is best its personal opinion. There can only be 1 right answer with live stock

The other day there was the nastiest fight on Facebook. Someone posted pictures of their new peacock mantis. Someone came on and very politely corrected the ID. It made a difference too, because it changed the potential size and natural behaviours. O....M.....G..... world war 3. EVERYone jumped on the polite person. I admit I joined in.... I said "Polite Guy" was correct and I was HOPING someone would come at me to say I was wrong.... no one did.
