How much taller should the secondary drain be compared to the main drain line? 1/2” or more like an 1”?

It should be about an 1" difference. The main drain should be completely submerged and the secondary should be above slightly. Also, you may want to add some silicone grease and/or rubber spline (similar to window screen spline, but smaller) to keep salt creep at bay.

Thanks. Where do you apply the silicone grease? Around the lid I assume?

The only way to quieten the waterfall sound is to raise the secondary as folks have said. Just make sure to do it safely. Close down the valve completely so that all water is going down the secondary and then you’ll know by how much you can increase the height. I wouldn’t personally have the top of the pipe less than 1” below the top rim of the box. Also, the primary should be at least 1” below the mouth of the secondary, but there are benefits to having it much lower than that. I just screw a strainer into the bulkhead right at the bottom of the box.

So if I understand this right. I close the main gate valve all the way. Let the water level settle. Then measure from the secondary to where the water level needs to be so the openings from the internal box are under water and raise the secondary by this measurement.

I do not have to do anything to the main drain line?

Won’t when I open the main drain gate valve back up the water level will drop some if I don’t raise the main drain height?

Also, the other thing to do (if your return pump allows it) is to calibrate your return pump. When I first set up my system, I got the gurgling noise, etc... then I calibrated my m1 and it was dead quiet afterwards. Just another thought.

What do you mean by this? Calibrate it how? My Cor20 is hooked up to Apex with flow monitors on both returns.

You need to fully close the primary so that you can determine how much water head height builds up above the mouth of the secondary so you don’t raise it too high. Once you’ve figured that out and adjusted the stand pipe height, you simply start to open the primary valve so that only a tiny trickle remains in the secondary. That will quiten the system to the degree that is safely possible.

Some pumps offer calibration to allow minimum and maximum flow based on your demands (size of tank, manifolds, etc). I have the Vectra m1, which has a calibration option, but I'm not sure about other pumps, but thought it worth mentioning as an option?
Follow what ca1ore mentions above to dial it in and you should be good to go.

So after I close it and determine how much I need to raise it are you saying raise both the main and secondary pipe height? Or just the secondary pipe height?

Then I start opening the valve so only a little drains through the secondary and most drains through the main.

Ok so I shut the main gate valve and I have about 1” of room in the external overflow box to the top. So should I raise the secondary by like 1/2” and see what that does?

Ok then just start to slowly open gate valve to let the majority of water come down main. The water In the external box shouldn’t drop and should keep the bulkheads from the internal box submerged.

Think I finally have it?
 
Exactly. Whether it will actually quieten the thing or not is a different question LOL.

So I made the secondary 1/2” longer. Adjusted the valve slowly and got the bubbles to lessen, BUT as I opened the valve the water level in the external box dropped and I got the waterfall noise again!

I can’t really raise the height anymore of the secondary drain. Should i raise the height of the main drain?
